Road
Town, Tortola is the capital of the British Virgin Islands. This is
the BVI's largest island, boasting a population of 18,000 inhabitants. Not
surprisingly, Road Town houses a bustling community and the main business
district of the BVI. Take a dinghy ride to Village Cay, where you will
be within walking distance of an eclectic collection of unique boutiques,
shops and restaurants. Be sure to look out for the exquisite jewelry
selections.
Another great place to rent a car, you could invariably spend weeks
exploring the island and the great delicacies it has to offer. You can
dine on cuisine from around the world, visit some of the most amazing
secluded beaches or the many historic sites as you travel up and down
the stunning scenic mountainous roads of Tortola.
There is an incredibly large selection of bars and restaurants for you
to choose from here, including the Village Cay Marina Restaurant, which
is said to have inspired Jimmy Buffet's song, 'Cheeseburger in Paradise'.
Spectacular sunsets can be witnessed on the islands north-western
shoreline.
Located in
Tortolas west end, Soper's Hole is tucked in the lee of Frenchmans
Cay. This cove is renowned for its colourful architecture and Caribbean
ambience, not to mention the role it played in the days when the territory
was dominated by pirates! Stop for a bite to eat at Pussers, then
stroll along the avenue of shops offering a selection of perfumes, clothing,
jewelry, artwork, swimwear and water sports equipment. Across the bay
is the Jolly Roger, a pirate bar with a laid-back atmosphere, and often
the venue for live music.
